This is just my opinion, but having never hiked in the
Sierra before, I thoroughly enjoyed the "1st time" feeling
of hiking the high Sierra during my PCT hike last year.
Similarly, I avoided visiting Baxter State Park
so I could enjoy the same sort of feeling as I finished at Katahdin
on my AT thru-hike.
It may sound crazy, but for *me*, doing the JMT or Katahdin
before a thru-hike would be like sneaking a peek at your
presents before Christmas morning.
Obviously I wouldn't suggest putting off these sorts of trips if you
don't
see a thru-hike in your future but if you are planning a thru in
the next couple of years, then why not wait?
