[pct-l] thru hike in 2006

Let me chime on in with these thoughts.......it seems a successful thru-hike
depends mostly on flexibility. Trying to commit to hiking the distance with
someone who you don't know before you start hiking may lend some comfort on
the eve of a major journey, but chances are your differences are going to
shine within the 1st couple weeks. Most of the thru hikers I've met on the
trail in the Sierras who didn't start with close personal friends had
adopted a solo approach while loosely hiking on and off with other people as
each indivdual's style and schedules evolved. The only teams I've run
accross were long time friends before they started hiking. I'm not saying
teaming up from the getgo is a bad idea, but be prepared to go solo as soon
as it becomes necessary to keep the smile on your face and your dogs
pounding the trail as you and only you see fit. Nobody wants to hide behind
a pine tree when they see their ex-partner coming down the trail heh heh.
