Wildcat Bob,
Having had critters climb into and upon my sleeping bag on the Appalachian Trail, I can understand your concern regarding a tent, however I'm trying an alternative in my section hike this summer, a bivy sack and a tarp. The bivy sack is light but provides some of the functionality of tent; keeps water out, provides extra warmth and acts a barrier against critters. The tarp isn't really necessary, but I'm thinking that if I have to set up camp in the rain, it would be useful. The total weight of both is less than 2 lbs.
Also, I have a general question about tarps. I used a tarp many times, but it just consists of a light, square piece of nylon for around $25. From what I can see, the tarp tent looks and feels like nylon, cut in the shape of a tent for $200. Is there something more to it?
