Dave, definitely consult the archives at
http://www.backcountry.net/arch/pct/ ; also check out Backpacker Gear Test
(BGT) at http://www.backpackgeartest.org/ , http://thru-hiker.com/ , and
http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/index.html .  There
will definitely be more opinions on this list in the future, but the tent
issue is frequently discussed and updated.

 Reliable cottage-industry manufacturers include

Henry Shires of tarptent fame, www.tarptent.com/ ;
Brawny and Rainmaker's Dancing Light gear
http://www.trailquest.net/store.html (typically closed in summer),
GVP gear (for packs especially) at http://www.gossamergear.com/ ;
Golite www.golite.com/ .

I KNOW there's plenty of others popping up, but these are the ones that come
to mind.

I like tents, too. Bugs outside, me inside. I share a Sierra Designs
Meteor light with my husband, and between us the load is worth the benefit,
although not ultralight. We may reconsider for our next thru-hike.

Hello all~
I am planning on COMPLETING a PCT thru-hike in 2005 and I am currently in my
"find out everything you can about everything" mode. I have just finished
reading Ray Jardine's "Beyond Backpacking" and I am now extremely fixated on
getting my "big 3" under 6 pounds. To do this I need a shelter weighing no
more than 2.5 pounds. Here's my problem: I HAVE to have a tent, no other
way
around it. Is there a tent out there worth purchasing or should I just suck
it
up and learn to live with a tarptent? I have read about the Europa II and
it
seems to fit the bill, however I do not consider any of my research complete
until I have consulted all of you. I definitely appreciate anything and
everything you guys can tell me. Happy trails!

Wildcat Dave
