I agree that hitching out from the campground to Independence can be bad. Guess we were lucky. Met some folks on the way down and they were able to give us a ride. Then the folks from the motel drove us back up for $10-$20. Same can be said for Sonora Pass or Echo Lake or Sierra City or Etna or Stevens Pass or ........ Timing can be everything. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. 

And speaking of time, there is no question that going out for resupplies takes time. It is also part of the experience. So, you need to weigh several factors: hitching, time away from the trail, pack weight, need for a shower, ice cream, cost for a room, ice cream, etc.
