[pct-l] JMT: getting from Lone Pine back to SFO after the trail

Can't help with the public transportation questions, but as for hitching, I
managed to hitch from Lone Pine to SF last year when I got off the PCT. It
took about 3 hitches to go from Lone Pine, to the road into Yosemite, to the
hamburger stand at Tuolomne Meadows. From there, I managed to talk to
someone who ended up offering me a ride all the way to Santa Clara.

For the most part, I advocate approaching people leaving stores and such
while hitching but it didn't seem appropriate for most of the day. Stand at
the north end of town for the hitch out of Lone Pine. I found most people
at the rest area by the road into Yosemite were leaving the park so I stuck
out my thumb on the road opposite the rest area. There was one place where
there was enough room for a car to pull most of the way off the road. I
stood just before that.

At Tuolomne, I was really looking for a ride to the valley but I got lucky
when I found my ride was going all the way to Santa Clara. I didn't hitch
that one, I just talked to someone in the parking lot and they were heading
my way.

I doubt hitching is prohibited in California but it probably is on the
interstates. It may also be prohibited in the National Parks but I'm not
sure about that. As it turns out, I didn't need to hitch in the park. With
any luck, you can probably do the same.

Best of luck,
Mara
