That way if anyone really wanted to remove the marker, they could carry their portable screw driver (ie Swiss army knife) and waste a lot of daylight hiking time. Or maybe a DeWalt at 5 lbs+. LOL

I detect a trace of sarcasm. My intent here was not to suggest a way to
facilitate theft of markers. I was suggesting a way to make maintenance
of markers easier as well a reduce the need for replacement markers.

By the way, is there any standard for placement of markers on the trees?
I noticed while hiking through snow that sometimes the markers point the
way of the trail, but about 1/2 of the time they mislead. For example: a
tree at the turn of a switch-back which the trail approaches from 8:00
o'clock and turns leaving the tree at 10:00 o'clock should (in my
opinion) have two markers at the 8 & 10 o'clock position on the tree to
indicate the trail doesn't go straight ahead. Not important in late
summer, but truly useful information in the spring, when there are many
feet of snow still on the ground.
