Thanks Paul. Was just getting a bit worried about my kid, Hoosier Owl,
as I had not heard a word for over a week. Got your email, and then
shortly afterward he called. He, Steve, Sara and Pineneedle are at Red
Meadows, trying to get lunch right now.
What a great network you guys are! I feel much less worried about
Hoosier knowing all the good people looking out for each other on the
trail......

May 25: (just north of Highway 58) Jason and Addy, and Cadence.
May 26: sobo from Hwy 58) Cecilly B(sp?), Southpaw, Platy, Mystic,
2Obtuse, Quixote, Birdnut, Bat, Weather Carrot, German Tourist, Radar,
Pacman, Wildflower, Beer Snob, MGD, Dr. Feelgood, Charley, Goat,
Spright, Sky Walker, Chinaman, Nowhere Man and Walking Carrot. Lost my
pencil in Tylerhorse, so that's all. Met Billy Goat (hiking) and Meadow
Ed at Saufley's in Agua Dulce - that's the third time I've bumped into
Billy Goat on the PCT.
Section Hikers: try to hike sobo when the thru's are coming thru -
you'll meet more people than if you'd stayed home (and funnier names).

Hey I have a pair of gently used, (at least I dont ever remember wearing
them) Frog toggs (size xl I think) to give to a poor hiker for the
price of postage. I dont like the other set I had for my 2002 AT hike,
but they smell beyond repair and dont work well in my opinion. Any class

Hello to all from Laraine (Ladeda) and Melouise (Pell Mell): We're
planning on hiking Washington this year beginning July 12th at Cascade
Locks and heading north! We'll take the alternate route thru Carson to
Panther Creek c.g. (seems only sensible). Have a couple of questions
we'd appreciate feedback on:
1. We know this is a little early starting but are limited to being
home before 8/20 - we'll definitely check on trail conditions before
starting & be prepared to skip around if necessary - any thoughts on
snow conditions - shall we bring an ice axe?
2. What's everyone using for water treating/filtering these days? In
2000 on my attempted thru-hike I used the Safewater Anywhere inline
filter but that doesn't seem to be available now.
3. Does it make sense to hitch out to Trout Lake? Is there much traffic
on that road?
It's good to be back on the list, I have some hiker friends from 2000 on
trail again this year (Nacona, Aussie Crawl, etc.). Sorry I wasn't able
to come to ADZPCTKOP this year but I'm doing a "mental thru-hike" now
(just finished my first year of college at ripe old age of 62 - planning
on getting a BA, loving it except it cuts into my hiking time).

Isn't is funny how you ignore most of those posts on issues that you
don't
care about until the issue comes up and then find that the archive
search tool
doesn't work and you are now forced to ask that stupid question to the
list
that has surely been asked 18 times before in the last 6 months?
So, here goes;
Is it better to send a package to Kennedy Meadows (south) by UPS or US
mail?
I know that Kennedy Meadows will pick up packages at Ridgecrest for a
small
fee but how do you arrange this? Do they just go and pick up everything
there
and then charge the hikers when they come to pick it up, or? Will UPS
deliver
directly to Kennedy Meadows?

We've section hiked parts of the JMT in Sept and Oct several times, and
I've
thru hiked JMT in August. Fording is not a problem - only one above the
knees
would be Evolution Creek. I assume you are going North to South. South
side
of the passes in Sequoia-Kings Canyon tend to be dry - you might walk 4
to six
hours without good water if you camp at the last place with water on the
North side of the pass each night. We try to be in a position to get
over the
pass in the morning to avoid the risk of afternoon thunderstorms (based
on
previous bad experiences). A liter and a half will get me between any
two water
points on the JMT. Normally I carry about a liter, and pump once during
the day.
If we plan a dry camp to get a better start the next day, then we have
to
carry about 4 liters between the two of us.
One problem in late Sept and Oct is that the nights are very long - dark
at
6, and too cold to stay out of the sleeping bag. Even in early Sept the
temperature sometimes drops to 20.

You're equating a randomly placed item whose return has been requested
by
the owner with (what some consider to be) an historic artifact? C'mon,

That's a much more valid comparison than the one you make.
As for whether removing a trail marker constitutes cleanup of litter,
I'd be
a lot more willing to listen to that argument if the person making it
picks
up all litter (or most litter, or even a few pieces of litter) other
than
the coveted trail marker. If you're picking it up because it has some
value
to you (economic or otherwise) and you leave the other crap you
encounter
along the way, you really dilute the argument that you're cleaning up
for
the LNT benefit.

On this we agree--although I reach a different conclusion. Taking an old
marker deprives someone else of the shared discovery, even if (perhaps
*especially* if) it's well off the current PCT route.

Regarding water: I don't remember using a filter at all in Washington.

from streams all seemed good.

two
rivers may give you a big challenge until the middle of August. I'd be
concerned about them.

Well, I used UPS witih no problem. I have even seen Fed Ex up there. I
believe UPS deliveres. I'm pretty sure the store charges a small amount
for
holding the package. Here is what I used (don't know if the phone will

When I was shooting "Walk" last year, I ran into Tikka
at Stehekin, WA (northern part of the state) and he

If you read the link, you will see how much power the President
really does have and how little congress really does have these days . (
Thanks to a little bill Clinton signed in 1994 on Exec. Orders) Both
Clinton and Bush are/were puppets for the IMF . ( Enjoying the Patriot
act???) Me neither!!
Case in point is the Olympic National Park in 1994 had 140 summer
employees, this summer they get 25!! Last year they had 140 permanent
works, this year they have 120. Each year they get less funding and you
get to pay more! I am a good little scout and pay my annual pass money
of 30.00 for a pass. The bridge one mile from campground has been
washed out for 5 years and Ranger Rita says it isn't going to get fixed
even though it would take me one weekend , a trip to home depot and
500.00 to fix. This of course plays into U.N. "Parks are for Elite Few"
viewpoint.
You may not believe this is happening , but it is under your noses
and the U.N. owns your parks. Maybe the folks there will get paid in
Euro coins. ( The IMF will see to that soon enough) Special note is
that our Department of Interior pays the wages of Rent-O Troops in Iraq
( Mercenaries).
OK, so you don't care the U.N. is in control of our parks as long as
they take care of them. Keep in mind the wild card! Your access and mine
are being slowly closed off through quotas and under funding. Global
This!!!

I used USPS and I think they deliver right to the store. In '99 they
charged
a $2 fee for drops and you searched for your own box. I also think they
arranged for sending packages out for $2 above postage.

I recently had the tip break off of one of my Komperdell poles. What's

best way to go about getting a replacement, or is it more trouble than

I understand it's hard to get Komperdell replacements. I'd try to
repair
them as best as possible, use them until they were shot and get some
Lekis.
You'll pay more intially, but they have great customer service and parts
are
readily available.

If you got them, by chance, at REI, take them there. Even if you didn't
buy
them there.... My first poles were REI brand made by Komperdell. The
tips
wore off and they replaced them for nothing. I took a minor header in
the
Sierra last summer and they also repaired my Leki poles ( replacing one
tube
sectioni) for nothing.

REI sells a repair kit for Lekis for $25 - includes a couple of tips,
baskets, etc. The tips are pressure fit - once you wrestle the old one
off, just pound the new one on. It will fit OK - different basket
attachment, but otherwise, they're all pretty much alike.

pass. The bridge one mile from campground has been washed out for 5
years
and Ranger Rita says it isn't going to get fixed even though it would
take
me one weekend , a trip to home depot and 500.00 to fix. This of course
plays into U.N. "Parks are for Elite Few" viewpoint.
You may not believe this is happening , but it is under your noses
and
the U.N. owns your parks. Maybe the folks there will get paid in Euro
coins.
( The IMF will see to that soon enough) Special note is that our
Department
of Interior pays the wages of Rent-O Troops in Iraq ( Mercenaries).
OK, so you don't care the U.N. is in control of our parks as long as
they take care of them. Keep in mind the wild card! Your access and mine
are
being slowly closed off through quotas and under funding. Global This!!!

chill out! Not only is this post NOT about the PCT, the post conveys
an erroneous conclusion about the referenced article.
The article does NOT say that the UN has soveriegnty over any morsel of
US land. What's more than that, the US largely controls the UN and the
IMF. Without our funding, neither would exist.
Furthermore, if you actually READ the article, there is no single piece
of land the size of Colorado that is referenced in the article, as your
post suggests. The article states that, in aggregate, all the land
that falls under this UN designation adds up to an area equal to 51
million acres, which is roughly equal to the area of Colorado.
On top of that, the UN is CLEARLY not represented in the article
as "Landlord" of ANY property in the United States. In fact, the
article specifically says "U.N. designations don't give the U.N. formal
authority to regulate American land". The only consequence that the
article cites as a result of such UN designation is "The U.S. is
required to regularly report to the U.N. on the status of its World
Heritage Sites".
The article also mentions that such UN designations stopped mining in
Yellowstone several years ago, which doesn't sound too bad to me,
especially when compared with the current administration's desire
to "put our national parks to use" and drill, mine, and log in our
national treasures. Its a shame that people who care about protecting
our national treasures from commercial exploitation must appeal to
international help because our politicians would rather cowtow to the
powerful corporate interests that line their pockets.
Where did you hear about this, Rush Limbaugh? ...or some other extreme
right-wing nut-job? :-)
Not trying to be mean, the article just doesn't say what you suggest it
does.

If you want to read the text of the World Heritage Treaty instead of
reading
absurd right wing propaganda about it, you can go to:

Don't take my word for it. Read it, and you will see tha the treaty does
not
give control or ownership of the National Parks to the UN.
And BTW, it is the Republican controlled congress that controls funding
for
the National Parks, not Clinton and not the UN. I can't decide whether

idea that Clinton is somehow responsible for underfunding the National
Park
Service, even though he is not longer in office, is more or less
unusual
than the idea that the UN controls the National Parks.
So Cathy, if you want to change the situation, the best plan is to vote
in
some new members of Congress who will fund the Park Service. Don't blame
a
person who left office years ago.
