[pct-l] Re: pct-1: Hitchhiking & other assistance

Last August when I was hiking the Oregon portion of the PCT past Crater Lake there was a 25 mile waterless stretch and the temp. was a hot 100 degrees. When I reached Road 138 or 62 around 3 pm I felt like I needed more water to get me to the next water source. I figured I would hitchhike to the nearest store and buy some. The cars were flying by (the few that past) and no one stopped. After asking a higher power for help, I spied an empty stash of water bottles and decided to hold an empty bottle up to show passerby's that I needed water. The second car that past did a U-turn, stopped and handed me a bottle of water and asked if I needed anything else.

Later as I was hiking up the trail, I met two mountain cyclist taking a break, We talked for a few minutes and I mentioned needing extra water so I could cook a warm meal. They gave me what they had left in their bottles and wished me well. That evening I had a hot meal of chicken noodle soup, cheese and pudding. I felt like I was in heaven.
