Maybe it's just trail gossip getting garbled, but my understanding is
that there were two different fires in roughly the same area.  One was
set by a male hiker trying to burn toilet paper on the 7th, and the
other was set by a female hiker in a mishap with a cooking fire (stove?)
on the 12th.  The first was put out fairly quickly, while the second is
still burning.  Amy's journal refers to the first fire, not the second.
