There is an alternate route I would suggest if you feel comfortable straying
off trail. When you get to 1000 Island Lake, go around its north side to its
head under Banner Peak. A low saddle is visible to the south. Go over it and
you will be at the head of Garnet Lake. There is an acre sized piece of rock
here, of the old metamorphic Ritter Range that is glacier polished like a
cabachon. There is another saddle, south, that looks more difficult but is in
fact likewise an easy walk. It takes you to the Nydiver Lakes. Descend south
toward Lake Ediza, angling across the creek and onto the trail to Iceberg Lake.
From there, continue to
Cecile Lake by trail, then cross country down to Johnston Lake and the trail
back to Red's Meadows. If you have the topo you will be able to easily find
the route. It is spectacular!
