Whatever you carry, I think it's a good idea to have two choices as far
as hiking pants go, whatever the second is (double duty for underwear in
warm weather? :) ). I believe the versatility of convertibles is worth
the extra weight even if you carry separate shorts, which I do. Then, I
love hiking in shorts and hardly ever zip the legs on unless it's below
the 60s so for me it makes sense to carry 2 different shorts, if you
don't plan on using the shorts that much the soccer shorts might be
enough.
