[pct-l] Food Dehydrators

<<< Wow - How cool is that? When you are done is it like a
turkey-soup-fruit-leather?

No, it's not like fruit leather. It is dry and crumbly. The pieces of turkey
and veggies are hard and the liquid is powder-like.

When I make the soup initially, I make sure to cut all the solid pieces up
very small. Once I begin to dehydrate the soup, I blend the soup just a
little more before I pour it on the solid trays to make sure the solid food
is small enough that the food dries through out and not just on the outside
of the food (leaving moisture trapped in the middle of the food
particle). Then once during the later drying, with my fingers, I mix up the
mixture of mostly dried food even more to make sure everything underneath is
getting dry. I guess I get a little nervous about the food going bad because
of not getting all the moisture out. (The food is out of the freezer, being
sent to me on the trail, a total of about sometimes 3 weeks.)

One dried tray holds enough for two large servings of soup on the trail. The
serving turns out to be about 2.5 ounces dried. Pretty light. Then I just
add water on the trail. I put individual 2.5 ounce servings in a durable
baggie and then vacuum seal the baggie and freeze it for future use.

Hope this helps Betsy. There are many dehydrating food books out there. I
have found two books in particular that are wonderful. If you are
interested, let me know.

Happy foods on the trail.
