[pct-l] re:cellphones in the darndest places

I think calling your mother on her birthday qualifies as an emergency!
Whether or not you are hiking solo in the high sierra.

home. It was also my mother's birthday. Unfortunately, VVR only had a
satellite phone in 2003, which was a little pricey for me. I had packed my
cellphone for emergency use - and while I'm not sure this was an emergency,
I'll admit, the phone came in handy. While you can only get - very - spotty
reception at VVR, Steve, Steady's husband, drove me about 2 miles down the
road where we got roaming reception, and I was able to make my call (thank
again, Steve! he also let other hikers use the cellphone in his car to make
calls). also, I discovered the next day that I also got roaming reception at
the VVR boat launch across the lake. I had Sprint as a service provider.

her cellphone works, but after 10 days in the Sierra, it was nice to be able
to let my family know I was okay. (I was a solo-hiker)

get regular pay phone access.
