[pct-l] Cell phones

That is quite a large debate over here (which service to use). You can ask
four people what the best comapny to use and you will get five or six
different answers. It's really a toss up as to which ones are going to be
useful. I can find good coverage with AT&T in some areas, while my friend
gets crappy reception with Sprint, while in other areas it's the other way
around. Maybe past thru-and section-hikers can tell us what service you had
and how good the service was throughout your hike?

As for emergency service, yes, calling 911 is the main number for any
emergency. They direct the emergency on to the appropiate people from
there.

Subject: [pct-l] Cell phones

Being from Germany I have some questions about cell
phones in the US.
Apparantly I need a new cell phone for the US because
you use triband ones that are not common in Europe.
When I buy a new cell phone in the US what provider
should I use for best net coverage and reception?
Will I generally have good reception on the trail or
are there a lot of "white spots"?
And if an emergency happens, whom do I call? Just 911
or is there a special number for mountain rescue?
Thank you,
Christine
