[pct-l] "historical" trail on map A4

The Southern California guidebook (current edition) says that the  
section of trail on map A4 is no longer in use. However, there does not  
seem to be any other trail between A3 and A5 to connect the two and the  
trail as marked in the book clearly passes through map A4. Does anybody  
know what the deal is? If the trail on map A4 is a "relic of the past"  
as the book states then how does one get to A5?
