[pct-l] Best GPS

There are countless options and issues. The best one-stop location for
information and reviews is http://gpsinformation.net/

Some people seem to use GPS as their primary navigational tool. They have a
full featured GPS with a nice display and downloadable maps. On short trips
they leave the GPS on all the time to records their route. The units my
friends uses seem to run around 12 hours on a set of batteries. On longer
trips they turn the unit on periodically when they are at a cross roads or
wanting to know what sort of progress they have made. There are lots of
units which work well in this manner.

Other people use GPS as secondary navigational aid. Navigation is still
mostly compass & map, the GPS is used to confirm you haven't completely
blown it. For this something like the Garmin Geko is much cheaper and
lighter than the full featured GPS. I take a Geko 201 when I go on trips
which will have significant amounts of cross country travel. I load key
points in adavance (passes, water, etc)... but mostly use it to confirm I am
when I think I am on the map.
