In the pre-debit card era (1973) I hiked the AT and started with Travelers Checks. It was cold and raining from Spring Mt. to my first stop and I was ill pre-prepared. I made it a small store on the verge of hypothermia. I counter signed the Travelers check in the presence of the clerk, but she refused to cash the check becuase my signitures looked different. I learned two lessons, never sign a Traveler's Check when exhausted and shaking and carry cash. I had to hitch hike to Dahlonga Ga, where my check was cashed.
