It's actually a flowering plant, not a fungus.  It's a
saprophyte and lacks chlorophyll, so it doesn't look
liek your usual flowering plan.

Sarcodes sanguinea is in the Ericaceae family, along
with plants like heath, manzanita, huckleberry, etc.  

It's widespread in the mountain areas of California,
from 3,000-10,000 feet, from the San Jacintos north to
the Cascades, and in the North Coast ranges, into sw
Oregon and also in northern Baja CA.

And they definitely are beautiful!
