A friend and I also had a similar experience in Stehekin.  Linda and I were 
circling Glacier Peak last September when we got turned back by a fire close 
to Buck Creek Pass.  Instead of heading out across the Napeequa Valley and 
to our car at the White River Trailhead, we had to turn north and go out at 
Stehekin.  We had little cash and no checks.  They did let us use credit 
cards at the restaurant and at the store, but we were required to have cash 
for the boat!  We weren't sure how we could get home.  A TRAIL ANGEL at the 
restaurant loaned us $60 to pay for our boat fare, saying we could just send 
her a check in the mail.  Another pair of trail angels gave us a ride from 
Chelan to North Bend, where my husband could pick us up.  Before I could 
even call him from the single phone in Stehekin, he had received word from a 
ranger (who had found us retreating on the trail) that we were changing our 
plans due to the fire -- so he had already retrieved the car.

It is amazing the help we received when we needed it!
