[pct-l] Quick question..
About 2-1/4 miles south, at the border. Quoting from the Southern
California PCT Guidebook, 2003, page 69:
" State Highway 94 leads 50 miles east from San Diego to Campo, where one
turns south on Forest Gate Road, which in one block passes a US Border
Patrol station, where hikers should check in. The pavement ends beyond
Rancho de Campo but you continue south up the graded road. It jogs east at
Castle Rock Ranch, turns south at a T-junction with a poorer road, then
climbs moderately along a telephone line. After passing under a 500KV
powerline, you reach a junction with a good dirt road that parallels the
Mexivcan border. ... Now look uphill to the left, southeast, to see the gray
PCT monument atop a low knoll at the edge of the wide, defoliated border
swath. ... Walk up a short jeep road to the monument, an eight foor high
gray wooden affair constructed of five 12x12 posts and capped with the
soon-to-be-familiar PCT emblem."
It has been suggested on this list in the past that you either get your ride
to drop you off here at the monument or leave your pack in Campo (NOT
unattended), walk to the monument and back, pick up your pack, and head
north. Take your water with you.
