Three books are indespensible:
"The Complete Walker" by Colin Fletcher

"Walking Softly in the Wilderness" by John Hart

and lastly:
"The Sierra Club Family Outdoors Guide: Hiking, Backpacking,
Camping, Bicycling, Water Sports, and Winter Activities with
Children by Marlyn Doan.

This last may be out of print, but you could probably find a
copy at http://www.alibris.com
