[pct-l] Headlamps and Flashlights

I am a big fan of the PrincetonTec Aurora. I chose it over
other LED headlamps because of the adjustable hinge and the fact that
it doesn't have a bulky battery case at the back of the headband.
This combination of features makes it easy to use for reading in bed.
Don't laugh! I really rolled around on the floor at REI and Sport
Chalet as I tried different LED headlamps. I bet it looked silly!

By now I've purchased several Auroras. I keep one with my
hiking supplies, another one my inline skating pack, and one with my
everyday daypack. I make sure I have at least one with me when I ski
(generally night skiing at Mountain High, near Wrightwood). I've
loaned them to people during power failures. They make great Xmas and
wedding gifts (what, don't your friends explore lava tubes on their
honeymoons, too?).

The hinge does loosen up; I've had to tighten one down. My
main complaint is brightness; they're not really bright enough for
skiing or even inline skating. I wore two of them while night hiking
a PCT segment this summer -- one on my head, and one on my lower leg,
just below my knee. I was pleased with the result: not just the
increase in illumination, but the shadow angles picked out rocks (and
holes) on the trail. Perhaps I'll have something goofy to enter in
the equipment contest at the next ADZPCTKO: LED kneelamps!
