The advantage of a red light is that it does not hinder night visions. For 
instance, a ship's bridge is entirely lighted with red lights. That said, I 
never carry anything more powerful than a than I small LCD light, just enough to 
read by. Flashlights are heavy and I believe unnecessary. It is amazing how 
well our eyes can be adjusted to the dark if we are not dependent upon artificial 
light.
