[pct-l] Sierra vs Sierras



When Pedro Font saw the mountains from a hill in the east San Francisco Bay 
area in 1776, he called it "una gran sierra nevada."  "Sierra" means "saw" and 
when used in this way means mountains.  "Nevada" is snowfall or snowy....hence 
"snowy mountains"

Therefore "Sierras" means mountains-ses.  At some point in the far past the 
Sierra Club did an article in their Bulletin explaining the whole thing and 
imploring people not to say Sierras.

FWIW....not much.
