It is in excellent condition. Some rocky switchbacks after the pass, but
otherwise very nice. The locals camp a lot there on weekends.

I think so. Many beautiful lakes.

> 3. How easy is it to hitch from the trailhead near South lake to Bishop

Don't know. There are many cars parking on South Lake on weekends. But
there is also a little ressort (Parcher's) nearby, that might help you.
(Food, accomodation, friendly staff).

> 4. What sort of facilities are available in Bishop (eg grocery stores,
> accommodation, etc)?

Joseph's Bi-Rite market, a Von's. Many small outdoor/fishing gear stores.
