If doing the PCT next year, I wouild opt. for trout lake which has a great
little ranger station with good maps and his " THE" place to hitch a ride up to
cold springs campground to start your climb of Mt. Adams. ( Have an ice axe
and alum stubi ultralight crampons mailed there) The crampons work well on New
balance 800's series shoes . This a good mountain to climb as it is the second
highest in Washington or Oregon at over 12,000ft.
Trout Lake has a little flea market each weekend in the town hall with lots
of little older ladies who really know how to bake!!! Little restraunt at
makes good huckleberry pancakes and has a godd general store with enough stuff to
resupply out of.
Packwood is another looked over trail town . Many hikers just go to White
Pass , check in the motel and eat junk food from the cracker barrel. Packwood
has Pizza place , very nice super market, Small sporting good store.
