We hike mostly in Sequoia Kings Canyon & Yosemite area and wouldn't go 
without a bear canister.  Every trip has at least one night with a bear visit.  No 
problems since we started carrying canisters.  However, if cost is an issue, 
you can rent them at Yosemite & Sequoia Kings Canyon for about $5 per trip. I'm 
not sure if that is the visitor center or the wilderness office that has them. 
 We rented Bearikade Expeditions directly from wild-ideas for our JMT 
thru-hike.  I think SK rents Bearikades, Yosemite only Garcias.
