[pct-l] Bear Canisters

Kurt
Stuffing 9-days of the food described below into a Bearikade (Garcia is
bigger) wasn't easy. Picture your over-stuffed suitcase that you're sitting
on to get the catches to click in. Actually not that bad, especially since
I misspoke earlier. It's really 8 days of stuffing because even though'
there are 9 days of food with me, the first day's food is carried outside of
the canister. The stuffing had to be done 3 times.

The meals below are occasionally repetitious but this is a worse term
(9-days) scenario. For lesser periods between resupplies or when out of
bear country, greater variety, volume and condiments will be added that take
up more space and/or weight. All excessive meal wrapping is removed. The
breakfast packets fill in small gaps very well. I could substitute more of
them for the Granola and bring more arcane vitamins that probably make me
age like Dorian Grey on steroids.

The total weight for 9-days (will confirm meal tolerance at the end of the
month when starting the JMT and the last resupply will be at Muir Trail
Ranch) is a paltry 138.1 ounces or 15.34 ounces a day. It's not anticipated
doing the entire PCT on that starvation diet next year, but when carrying
the extra weight of a canister and a mandatory long distance between
resupply locations (and next year will be more challenging since VVR is
farther along the trail than Muir Ranch).

Hope the below is of minor assistance.

Hi JD..

You said:

>>I was able to get 9 days of food, tea, vitamins
>>and scented toiletries into the bugger (bear can).

I'm impressed!

I would be interested to hear what kind of food you
used, maybe a sample menu or two, and what the weight
per day was. Even using all FD I have never been able
to get as much as a week (for one) into my Garcia.
