[pct-l] Palisades Glacier Question

Well, there's Southfork Pass between Middle Palisade/Disappointment & (I
think) the Thumb, but....you'd need your ice axe & probably crampons (it can
get icy...). Oh - did I say it's cross-country? You go out of Finger Lake
& route-find over a ridge or so. But - that said, the terrain is drop-dead
GORGEOUS at this time of year. The backside of Southfork Pass is doable,
steepish at first, but not bad at all, really (ymmv ;-) ) Check out
Secor's guide to Sierra peaks - there's a good description of Southfork
there. FWIW, we've always taken the left fork.

The downside is that if you're going up the north fork trail to the
Palisades Glacier from Sam Mack Meadow, you'll have to backtrack some to get
to a route that gets you to Finger Lake -

We were in that area last summer attempting Mt. Bolton Brown - after it
threw a rock at us we descended & happily returned to camp at Finger Lake.
Gorgeous, gorgeous country.

| I'm going up to Palisade Glacier for the week end on a K-9 backpacking
trip.
| Is there a trail that will drop you down to the John Muir Trail.
