from what I've seen, it might not be tough to get a ride from the trailhead
into town, but getting a ride from town back to the trailhead may be a
different
story.  The gentleman who owns the fishing store accross the street from
where
whitney portal road intersects the 395 told me he has seen folks wait there
for
quite some time with no luck.  I had him call one of his buddies, and he
took me
up to whitney portal for $20.  Usually only other hikers will pick you up,
or
folks who have hitchhiked in the past.
