IMHO you will not need crampons anywhere on the trail. You can work the 
time of day, or chop steps in short sections to avoid the need for 
crampons. YOU SHOULD CARRY AN ICE AXE for self arrest. Failure to do so may 
(and has) result in death from a slip-and-fall.

You will need an Ice Axe from Kennedy Meadows on till about Sonora Pass, or 
further north depending on the snow year.

You may also need an Ice Axe on Mt. San Jacinto's Fuller Ridge (guidebook 
map B11), and on Mt. Baden Powell ( Map D5 near Wrightwood.)
