If we ever get a backpacking museum, I favor not locating it inside a
national park. Many parks already have too many visitors in their easily
accessed areas and I don't wish to add another attraction.

AS to REI and Jim Whittaker, no matter who sponsors, supports, or
operates the museum, some people will object. Obviously REI is getting
more oriented to the mass market and neglecting (IMO) backpackers,
climbers, etc. who started it and suuported it during its early years.
Maybe success will spoil or destroy REI. Maybe it will change into
something of little value to its former core customers.
