You need a climbing pass for Mt. Whitney. The PCTA also should have
information. There is a fee and a limit on the number of people coming
through, although this is not a problem for through hikers.

Yes, it will be very hot from Walker Pass to at least Kennedy Meadows and
probably to the Kern River. Leave very early in the morning or very late in
the afternoon from Walker Pass and carry enough water.
