Actually, regarding the long waterless stretches, I am
sure that I will opt for longer miles through there. 
It's not that an early start means 10 miles every day,
but it means that you don't HAVE to hike 20 miles
every day to start with, and as someone mentioned, you
can take whole days off in the early trail towns, like
Julian, without guilt that it's threatening your
schedule.  I really want to take a day off there to
check out the wolf sanctuary.  The year I hiked
through, we were feeling the pressure of high miles
from Day 1.  Waterless stretches are the sections
where I prefer long miles, siestas and night-hiking.

Thanks for everyone's input.  I'm now thinking very
positively of an early April start.
