Well, here we are, at the edge of June 1st. The Kern River snow survey sites
show NO snow on any of the sensors with the single exception of Tyndall Creek
(11,400') which is showing about 10 inches and a decline curve suggesting
that 2 inches per day is melting off. As such, the prediction that June 1 would
be a good time to enter the Sierras seems to hold true (by the dumb luck of
warm weather compensating for the slightly above normal snow). Yep, there is
still a lot of snow in the Yosemite area, but reports are that it is also
melting off fast. If you leave Kennedy Meadows today you won't likely reach
Yosemite for 10 to 14 days anyway. It will likely be gone by the time you reach
there.
If you haven't left yet, however, you will likely find that the mosquitos are
erupting, so be prepared. "Erupting" is the word for that is what they do.
One day camped at a lake you may find just a few, only to find trillions
attacking you the next morning. The sooner you enter the more likely it is that
you will pass some areas before the mosquitios erupt. If you wait until June
15th you may find that they are everpresent throughout the Sierras.
Good luck 2003'ers!
IMHO,
Greg
