I don't know about Anza, but Idyllwild is a great little town.  If you don't
want to take the Devil's Slide trail down to Idyllwild, you can hitch in
from Pines-to-Palms Highway.  The highway is about 26 miles before the
Devil's Slide.

Idyllwild has a good grocery store, PO, hiker-friendly outfitter, great
restaurants, good motels, and cheap camping right in town.

There's also a GREAT restaurant about a mile from where the trail crosses
Pines-to Palms Highway.  You can get water there.
