Here's some information for John Muir Trail hikers - I've travelled the Sie=
rras for the last four summer vacations. Most know that Greyhound abandoned=
the highway 395 route in 2001, but there are several alternatives which ma=
ke the East Side of the Sierras still the most convenient way to travel. Th=
e main (perhaps only) bus service along Hwy. 395 is Carson Ridgecrest Easte=
rn Sierra Transit Ph. 800-922-1930 or 760-872-1901. They run N & S out of t=
heir Bishop Station. Last year they travelled N from Bishop on Tuesday, Thu=
rsday and Friday, going S from Bishop on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Thei=
r most northern stop is Carson. Rates are less than Greyhound. They can sen=
d you a schedule if you call them. If you plan to exit the trail by one of =
the many routes, check ahead with them for the location and time which the =
bus passes. They will even pick up along the highway. One final note - thei=
r drivers privately will 'do a trailhead' trip at many trailheads such as B=
ishop Pass Trail. These can be arranged by calling their office.
>From Carson, travel to and from Reno (the best little town for Sierra trave=
l) by using Pride Transit, ph. 866-687-7433 or customer service at 775-575-=
0252 which makes several trips per day between Carson and Reno. The Reno Gr=
eyhound station ph. # is 775-322-2970 and for Amtrak to Reno call 800-USA-R=
AIL.
Connections to Ridgecrest in the south can be made through Kern Regional Tr=
ansit at 800-323-2396. They can also be made through Ridgecrest Area Transi=
t at 760-375-9777. Have a pleasant hike! Tom Simon.
