We spotted our first bear just trail-south, map-east of Cajon Pass in '97.
It headed somewhere else in a hurry as soon as we met.  I'm sure there are
bears almost everywhere along the PCT, but they are not a serious problem
except in the National Parks where know-nothing campers and poor NPS policies
have trained them to identify hikers as a food source.
