[pct-l] Re: equipment questions

Karen - Thanks very much to you, and all the others who have responded. You
guys are my daily "fix" for trail-related info & discussion. None of my
friends or coworkers really understand why I get so excited about this
stuff, even if they are happy for me.

Anyway, a few more questions as I scramble to get my gear together at the
last minute...

1) I do have "some" snow/mountaineering experience (Rainier seminar a couple
of years ago), but nonetheless it sounds like instep crampons are probably
overkill & not a good idea. What about Yak Traxx? I've never tried these,
do they help at all? I'm simply looking for a simple, lightweight way to
gain a little extra traction, so that I can still wear my running-type shoes
in the snow.

2) I'm interested in hearing some feedback on the "Safewater Anywhere"
in-line filter you can splice into a reservoir drinking tube. I've always
enjoyed being able to filter & drink right away, but I'd like to dump my Pur
Hiker if there's a lighter, non-chemical alternative.

3) Still haven't seen anything about availability of gas canisters near the
trail. Is it equally easy to get these as it is to get alcohol at resupply
points? If so I'm thinking now of staying with my Pocketrocket - it is SO
easy & I will probably only boil enough water for dinner so fuel will last
me a long time.

Can't wait to get going,
Matt (although I'm starting to think of myself as "Ajax" again...)
