If you're going to set a cahce at the picnic area anyway, why risk hanging =
it?
Last summer, we drove to Sonora Pass campground and buried three 5 gallon p=
lastic buckets with tight fitting lids containing our supplies; shot the lo=
cation with a GPS, took a few photos, and went home to start hiking. Everyt=
hing was underground where the critters couldn't get at it, unwelcome human=
attention was avoided, and we knew it would be there when we got there. It=
did however take us a while to find it since all trees look alike.
FYI - no overnigfht camping is allowed at the picnic area and there was no =
water there. Going north, you'll cross a stream about 0.5 mile south of the=
highway as you descend into Sonora Pass. Make good use of the garbage can,=
picnic tables, and toilets.

If you are doing a section hike, South Lake Tahoe to Yosemite and beyond,
and have time to drop food off, you can hang food from a tree at Sonora
Pass. I did this once, and it was there when I came through. Of course I
used screen on the outside of the stuff sack to keep the squirrels out,
which also worked. There is enough of a forest there to do this... There
is also a garbage can at the pass to get rid of stuff...
