And the answer is " Chelan"!!! When thru-hikers get to Stehiken in northern
Washington, they mostly mail their box there .
The correct method is not to mail anything to Stehiken but to hop on the
" Lady of the Lake " boat and take a 55 mile ride down lake Chelan to the
town of Chelan. ( Cost of a round trip ticket is 23.00)
You stay in town overnight and go eat a well deserved meal at the "
Campbell House" which is an old hotel near the south shore with great food.
Chelan has a big safeway store and is one of the nicest towns in Washington.
The 55 mile boat ride is a treat in itself and takes about 4 hours down
lake. ( This is also a great kayaking trip as well as their are shelters
about every 8 miles along the lake with good camping)
You are so close to the end of your hike , you need to spend 3 days in
Stehekin and see Buckner Orchards, Rainbow falls, and the old log school
house which finally closed in 1988.
Also go visit the Courtney Bros. ranch 9 miles up trhe valley. They rent
mt. bikes to take you back to town and have a huge cowboy breakfast and
dinner which cost about 15.00 ,but well worth it.
