 Back in 2000, " Hawkeye" had a cool filter system. He carried a Platapus on
top of his 7 lb. K2 pack and spliced in a " Fram Gas Line Filter" from a
Datsun truck in his drinking tube. He said it did a great job taking out the
bigger chunks in water . Price is right at about 7 bucks from any Schucks
auto parts. Weighes only ozs. and is clear so you can see all the " Goodies"
    Esbit Tabs??? These are a tool of the DEVIL!!!!! Turns a beautiful pan
into a black tar sticky ,smelly mess. Ice Cubes are easilier to light than
these things!! Better option is make a homemade alcohol stove and burn "
Heet" gas tank dryer.
   All kidding aside, they make a good back up if you run short on fuel.
Maybe wise to pack a half dozen . Many folks have used them the whole wise,
but they are rare. Main thing is high cost verses most anything else used to
cook with and no real weight advantage over alcohol.
      Giardia is no problem . Better to worry about Viruses in the Southern
Section waters. ( Which many filters don't stop anyway) Small bottle with
eyedropper  and chorox. ( 4 drops per liter) Taste like swimming pool water!
( I only use if water looks bad and see camp of 15 illegals upstream)Many
commerial treatments out there. BY Sierras , most all filters are clogged and
in a box headed home anyway.
