[pct-l] Re: Newcomer!

Regarding Whitney:
I have seen day hikers do it - some have had problems because of the huge
elevation difference (like altitude sickness). If you can do it, do a circle
trip from Lone Pine over Cottonwood Pass and then up Whitney from Guitar
Lakes. However, since thousands do it the other way, you could join the
crowd. I have never gone up from the Lone Pine side, but I would imagine it
to be about the same grade - and that is not bad. It is the 14,000 feet you
feel. Just take it slow. And be prepared for heat and cold, sun or rain -
but hope for clear weather. Say hello to the marmots!

As for Oregon, there are some beautiful sections - and some pretty boring
sections. Also, some very dry sections. My favorites are any part of the
trail from South Sister north to the Columbia, coming down (or going up) via
Eagle Creek. You go past the Three Sisters, Mt. Washington, Three Fingered
Jack, Mt. Jefferson, and Mt. Hood. Finding water is not generally a problem
in that area. In the south, Crater Lake and Mt. Thielsen are also good, but
water is problem.
