[pct-l] Re: Ice Axe Length



Sam - I have no problem at all with your decision to use a short ax for
strictly self arrest use only on the PCT to save weight. After all, that is
what I did. I'm just saying that for mountaineering I prefer the long ax for
reasons stated
  I like it on the down side on a moderate slope because it is more fluid
especially if you are slightly descending as you traverse.  If I start to
slip, a simple poke and a pivot vaults me out of the slip and into the next
step. I guess I feel I'm using gravity rather than fighting it.  Think of
crossing a slope on cross country skis. The down hill pole does all the work.
It is much easier to cross using only your down hill pole than  using only
your uphill one. If the ice ax is long enough. Again, on moderate slopes. On
steep slopes, I want a hand hold above me as I kick steps across on a traverse
