[pct-l] Keeping Boots Fairly Dry

To protect your hiking boots during a major stream or river crossing,
have two bread wrappers with you, use them OVER the boots. Cut also a
couple short lengths of light cord or string to tie the wrapper tops
close to your legs just above the boot tops. Test for size first at
home, this will work with lightweight hiking boots which will fit inside
the wrappers. Also make sure the wrappers aren't the kind with holes
purposely made in them.

As you cross the stream, rocks and stuff will puncture the wrappers of
course, but not a great deal of water will enter to soak your boots,
usually just a little on the outsides only. Properly discard the
wrappers afterward - one time use!

These are for those larger, rocky-bottom stream crossings in which you
need the stability and sole thickness of your boots, rather than
sandals.

They're ok for snow travel too, but ONLY when used in conjuction with
full-length crampons strapped over the boot and wrapper combination.
