Samuel, the only cure for fear is knowledge. Most of that is gained through
personal experience. However, I know of no one who's carried bear spray on
the PCT. Though a number of people do carry it on the CDT. But there you're
talking about Grizzlies and not Black Bears.
Grizzlies, as they say are "A different kettle of fish." Black bears, except
in the Wilderness Amusement Parks (created by the National Park Service),
are pretty damn reluctant to come near people. If you're lucky you'll see
one in the distance. But it'll probably be its backside as it scampers away.
As to Black bears while you're sleeping. Generally unless you're camped in
an established campsite and have food in your tent, they won't bother you.
Sleeping in a campground in Yosemite, I had a bear walk by me less than 5
feet away. He was far more interested in the pack left outside of the bear
box than me.
