[pct-l] Rules on the trail.

Well said, Monte.

I like your rifle requirement, but personally prefer a .45-70 Marlin. UNFORTUNATELY, the powers-that-be are even more anal about firearms in the NP than they are about bear cans. We can't win! ARGH.

O.K. I'll bite!!! No one hates Government rules more than I and I would
require all thru hikers to pack a 338. Winchester Mag. and blow away any
problem bear in the park!! In two years , no more problem bears. ( And maybe
a few dead hikers who got in the way of stray bullets from phyco hiker with
large rifle) BUT, the rules are you need to carry a canister in certain areas
or get a possible ticket. If a ranger lets thru-hikers by with no canister,
he/she will have a tough go making section hikers pack one. We need to be a
good example as thru-hikers and try to follow rules. ( Even if we disagree
with them) Remember, if we don't follow the rules of the game, we may make it
harder on the following year's gang of thru-hikers. ( Just like our town
manners) If a group of thru-hikers trash a motel, next years hikers may not
get rooms. If a thru-hikers food and gear gets taken by Ma Bear and ranger
finds out, they will crack the next thru-hikers and we didn't do the bear any
favors either!!
