[pct-l] tarp, tent, or nothing

All-

There are many tarp-tents available. My Wanderlust Nomad Lite is good for
one and weighs about 1.5 pounds. My Tacoma-4-Two weighs in at 2.3 pounds and
is good for 2/3. Roan Moak also makes good tents. In general the price for
these tents is $200-$300. They are typically designed by and for
thru-hikers.

In general you will be very unhappy hiking the PCT without bug protection
and you MAY be very unhappy if you can't ride out a two-to-three day
downpour or a quick foot of unexpected snow. Both my tarp tents will stop
bugs and keep rain off me and my stuff. They aren't as bomb-proof as my
Stephenson but they are usually good enough.

Many "tarp types" that I know claim that they can rig tarps and carry
separate bug protection to equal what these tarp tents have to offer. In
general I believe that while this is theoretically true, tarp types simply
suffer if the bugs and/or weather is too bad.

Have you considered Henry Shires' tarptent? see http://www.tarptent.com
