The indian's name was Ishi.

Ishi was taken in by a Professor Theodore Krober at the University of California at Berkeley.  Ishi took Krober on a visit to his child-hood terrain--an account of which was
published by Krober in a book which included photographs.

For you Sci-Fi buffs, Krober is Ursula K Leguin's father.
